Obituary for Rosalie Minna Lindsay (Riess)

Rosalie Minna (Riess) Lindsay, 100, passed away on Wednesday, April 5, 2023, at Homestead Care Center in New Holstein, WI. She was born to the late Rev. Dr. Oswald and Eleanore (Koch) Riess in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada on August 28, 1922 and was baptized into the Christian faith. Rosalie was confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, in Detroit, MI. She was a graduate of and member of the Honor Society at East Commerce High School in Detroit, MI. After graduation, she worked as a secretary, eventually becoming the executive secretary to the regional manager of Alcoa Aluminum Company in Detroit, MI. She married Rev. Kenneth Milburn Lindsay on June 12, 1946, at Bethany Lutheran Church, LCMS, in a service performed by her father, Rev. Oswald Riess.

Following their marriage, Rosalie and Ken were sent to Moses Lake Washington, where Ken was to open a Mission Church for The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. Rosalie often recounted those early days with a twinkle in her eye as she would describe a door hanging off its hinges, attached to a cabin which, romantically, included no heat and no running water. They later moved back to Detroit, where Ken had been called to be Associate Pastor at Bethany Lutheran Church. There, while Rosalie worked at Alcoa Aluminum and Ken co-pastored Bethany’s large membership (with his now father-in-law), they began to grow their family, with the birth of their daughter Nora in 1951 and their son Kirk in 1953. The family spent summer vacations for many years in Hamburg, Michigan, at a small log cabin on quiet Little Silver Lake, where many memories remain.

Rosalie and Ken would go on to live in St. Louis, MO, Michigan, and finally Wisconsin throughout 56 years of marriage. Lovebirds (as their daughter Nora had always called them) to the end.

Rosalie is survived by her son, Kirk (Kathryn) Lindsay (St. Louis, MO); grandchildren, Kaitlin (Bruce) Johnston (Black Mountain, NC), Megan Hetzner (Sheboygan, WI), Amy Lindsay (Washington, DC), and Molly (Ryan) Rabe (Valparaiso, IN); great-grandchildren Azure Tinkle, Zane (Iyanla Rivera) Tinkle, and Winter Tinkle (Sheboygan, WI); great-great-grandson Ivíca Rivera Tinkle (Sheboygan, WI); and nieces and nephews Monica (Cye) Weinstein (Weaverville, NC), Judy Sievers (Fairview Heights, IL), Douglas (Joye) Jeffrey (Phoenix, AZ), Lynne (Dan) Carmichael (Waterford, MI), Mary (Tim) McClain (Eureka, MO), and Kathy (Gary) Bahron (Ballwin, MO).

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Lindsay; daughter, Nora (Michael) Hetzner; parents, Oswald and Eleanore (Koch) Riess; brother, Walter (Ingrid) Riess; sisters, Margaret (Burt) Kirby and Lois (Robert) Jeffrey; great-grandson Rowan Johnston; and niece, Gloria (Donald) Kaye.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 29, 2023, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, ELCA, N1230 Seven Corners Rd, New Holstein, WI 53061. Rev. Jim Liddle will officiate. A private ceremony for inurnment alongside her husband Rev. Kenneth Lindsay at Glen Eden Lutheran Memorial Park, Livonia, Michigan, will be held at a later date.
