Melvin passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the age of 96. He is survived by his wife Marcia L. Story, sons Ralph (Janice), Jeff, David Sprenger (Gail), Robert Sprenger, Richard Sprenger, and daughter Sandra Lewis (Scott Beckwith). Grandchildren Noelle Klement (Paul), Luke Story (Leslie), Wesley Lewis (Whitney Sellnow), Ross Lewis, Jenna Konkel (Caleb) Ian Sprenger, Sara Sprenger and Rachel Story. Great Grandson Benjamin Klement.
Melvin was the head of Human Resources for Eaton Corporation in Watertown, Wisconsin for 28 years. He enjoyed music, travel, history, boating, waterskiing, opera and his family. Melvin loved the country of Latvia and it’s culture, the native country of his deceased wife Velta E. Story (Skurbe). He enjoyed writing and poetry and could recite the poem “Annabelle Lee” from memory.
Melvin was active in the community and professional organizations, including President of the Governors Advisory Council to the Division Vocational Rehabilitation, Board of Directors of Watertown Memorial Hospital, President of Jefferson County Personnel Association, Advisory Board Member of Madison Area Technical College, President of the Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Waukesha County and the State of Wisconsin.
He was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin and a member of the best marching band in the country.
Melvin was a Private First Class of the United States Marine Corps serving during World War II. A memorial gathering will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, October 26th from 1:30 until the time of the service at 2:30 PM.
