Obituary for Hjordis I Mathews (Ylvisaker)

Hjordis Irene Mathews (nee Ylvisaker)

Born in Stoughton, Wisconsin on November 16th, 1943 to Hajalmer and Harriette (nee Dorland) Ylvisaker.

Hjordis accepted Christ October 25th, 1976, and was baptized September 13th, 1981 at Garfield Baptist Church. Her Baptismal verse was John 20:31; But these things are written...

Hjordis went to Mt. Sinai Nursing School and also worked at the hospital for awhile. She later worked in a Hispanic Health Clinic where she went out of her way to be helpful even after hours. Hjordis was faithful in her card ministry. She wrote "get well" and sympathy cards to the church family for several years. Her ministry was a blessing to so many.

Hjordis was married to husband Lynn Alfred Mathews March 23, 1996. He died May 12th 1996. Hjordith met her husband in the apartment complex where they both lived. They started to attend Garfield Baptist Church and eventually got married at that church. Unfortunately a tragic industrial accident took his life after only six weeks of marriage.

Hjordith didn't have an easy life, she experienced many tragic events, yet the Lord was faithful to her. She devoted time to reading the bible, praying for others, listening to WVCY, and loved to read Christian books. She was concerned that her family knew the Lord and used tracts and letters to reach out to them. Her hobby was stitchery; beautiful fine cross stitches, and many renderings of her work were framed and gifted or hung on her walls. She spoke of memories of her grandmother who would bake cookies with her. She spoke proudly of her Norwegian heritage.

Hjordis was close with her brothers, she spoke fondly of them, and she was the only girl. Since she never had children of her own her nieces, nephews and their children became like her own. I would be remiss not to mention her love for cats. She had her own cats over the years and was sad when she was not able to bring them into her new living arrangements. Her face lit up when she heard about her friend's new kitten, Percy. Percy and just cats in general were good conversation starters. I think just the nature of a cat brought comfort to her in spite of her many heartaches, set-backs and health issues that she experienced from early childhood to the present. Hjordis longed for the unconditional love of people and cats who would never give up on her.

John 20:31; But these are written, that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God; and by believing you may have life through His name.
