Obituary for Frederick J Hammer

Fred Hammer passed away July 24, after a long fight with brain cancer.

He was born on April 24, 1951, to Harriett and Fred Hammer. Fred is survived by his wife of 49 years and 8 months, Marsha Firnges Hammer. Their relationship grew while both were in high school and active in the Masonic youth organizations, Jobs Daughters and DeMolay.

Fred is a past Master Councilor of Malta Chapter Order of DeMolay and recipient of the Degree of Chevalier, the highest honor that an active DeMolay can receive. He was a longstanding member of Brookfield Lodge #370 (formerly Myron Reed Lodge). Fred earned his Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and his MBA from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

Fred is survived by his sons Edward (Amber) Hammer and his much-loved grandchildren Vivian and Logan; and Daniel (Courtney) Hammer. Further survived by his sisters Lois Schmatzhagen and Carylee (Colette Thiel) Hammer; and sister-in-law Debra (William) Carson. Also survived by niece Dennel (Roy) Meinzer and their children Ashley (Rich) Kurz and their children Riley and Jaxon; Brian (Natalie) Meinzer; Nick Meinzer and his daughter Phoenyx; and Ben Meinzer; nephew Michael (Julie) Paschke and their sons Jake and Jared. Fred is also survived by his loyal canine companion Millie; and further survived by his “second family” while growing up in Milwaukee, Bruce (Barbara) Kinlen and his family.

Preceded in death by his parents, Fred (Teamster Local 200) and Harriett Hammer (Globe Union); brother-in-law’s William Carson and Dean Schmatzhagen; and eight special furry friends.

Fred’s entire career was in transportation and logistics. His employers included Sullivan’s Motor Delivery, Yellow Freight, Mirro Corp. Manitowoc, ShopKo Stores in Green Bay, BonTon and GE Healthcare. He had a passion for playing golf and spending time with his family; he was a fan of the Packers, Brewers, Bucks and Badgers. He loved his wife more every day. He was a fan of rock and roll music and going to concerts, particularly James Taylor, Dave Matthews Band, and Blood Sweat & Tears. He enjoyed cooking and baking and working in the yard with his roses. He is a member of the Mustang V6 Club. Fred coached Ed & Dan in the Allouez Little League, was their Cub Scout leader, a youth leader and chaperone for youth mission trips, and past council president of Ascension Lutheran Church Allouez.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Wisconsin Humane Society or the American Brain Tumor Association are appreciated.
