Alby Betsy Louise (Baker) Boon passed away on Tuesday, December 3, 2019, at 5:26 PM in Madison, Wisconsin. She was the wife of the late Nelson Edward Boon Sr. They shared 56 years of marriage together until his death on October 15, 2000. She was the first-born child of four from the union of Alfred, a.k.a. “Fred,” Earl Baker and Alby Mary (Shores) Baker. Alby Boon was born on February 3, 1925, in Webster Groves, St. Louis County, Missouri. She was baptized at an early age into the Berean Seventh-day Adventist Church located at Sarah and Cook Avenue in St. Louis, Missouri.
Alby graduated from Charles Sumner High School in St. Louis in 1942 and was inducted into the National Honor Society as a result of her scholastic achievement. She went on to complete a two-year program at Tucker Business College in St. Louis in 1944. She married Nelson Sr. on her birthday in 1944. He was serving in the United States Marine Corp at the time of their marriage.
Alby was employed at the U.S. Army Finance Center in St. Louis, Missouri from April 17, 1951 through June 12, 1953. Subsequently, she received histotechnology technical training in the opthalmic laboratory at Washington University in St. Louis. In August 1957 the family relocated to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, at which time Alby embarked on her career at the Veterans Administration (V.A.) Medical Center in Milwaukee. From August 28, 1957 until her retirement as Supervisor – Histopathology Technician on June 30, 1986, Alby not only performed in the Histopathology Lab, but she served as the Federal Women’s Program Manager at the V.A. She also served on the “Equal Opportunity for All” business committee at the V.A., and she taught the histotechnology course at the Marquette University School of Medicine from 1966 through 1968.
Over the years, Alby served the Seventh-day Adventist Church faithfully at the Berean SDA Church in St. Louis and at the Sharon SDA Church in Milwaukee. As a member of those churches, she served as the church clerk, choir director, Pathfinder leader and Master Guide, Sabbath School teacher and Sabbath School Superintendant, and a member of the Lake Region Conference of Seventh-day Adventists Executive Committee in Chicago, Illinois.
The same can be said of Alby as was said of her sister, Magnolia Harris, who died on August 2, 2019. Alby “was also a wonderful mother and loving wife. She was very responsible in forming the spiritual tone of the home.” Raising two boys, she saw that they learned spiritual truths – in the home, in church, in church school, and in the outdoors of nature. Alby made sure they could swim and do the things Pathfinders do. She was an excellent homemaker, gardener, and cook. Her plants thrived under her care, and her homemade meals were literally a feast. “She would always have an encouraging word for you and give praise for a job well done.” She took special interest in the youth of the church, frequently providing opportunities for physical recreation and social gatherings in her home, as well as in the church.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her son – Nelson Edward Boon Jr. (Susan Bernice Boon); her sister – Yvonne Gathright; her grandchildren – Pamela Denise Wilson, Kevin Michael Boon (Felicia Boon), Jacqueline Marie Leveille (Karl Leveille), and Alana Boon; and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is preceded in death by: her loving husband – Nelson Edward Boon Sr.; her parents – Alfred Baker and Alby Baker; her second son – Clarence Roland Boon; her sister – Magnolia Alma Harris (Vivian S. Harris); her brother – Donald Baker (Betty Baker, also deceased); her grandson – Timothy Neal Boon.
